Durham police say a 38-year-old man stole a school bus in Toronto before crashing it into a McDonald’s drive-thru in Ajax while he was impaired.

In a news release issued Thursday, police said they responded to the area of Taunton Road West and Westney Road North for an impaired driving call at 11:30 p.m. on May 11.

It’s alleged that a shortened school bus was “driving erratically” and attempted to pull into the drive-thru of the fast-food restaurant, but collided with a barrier.

“Officers arrived on scene and initiated a traffic stop, successfully stopping the vehicle. The driver exhibited signs of impairment and was taken into custody without incident,” they said.

The bus was previously damaged after police said the suspect broke into a bus yard in North York and stole it. Police believe the driver also collided with other unoccupied buses in the lot and stole radios and keys from other vehicles.

Police allege that the suspect provided officers with a false name during his arrest. He was subsequently identified as Tanner Jon Davis, of no fixed address.

He’s charged with impaired operation of a vehicle, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, obstructing police and three counts of breach of probation.
