A woman has died after exiting her vehicle following a collision on Highway 401 in Etobicoke.

A 40-year-old woman is dead after a fatal collision on Highway 401 in Etobicoke that forced the closure of eastbound lanes for several hours late last night, heading into the early morning.

In a news release, Ontario Provincial Police say the crash happened on Highway 401 eastbound, east of Eglinton Avenue West, shortly after 11:45 p.m. Friday.

Police said the collision initially involved an SUV and a passenger vehicle.

“Following the initial collision, the driver of the SUV exited the vehicle and was subsequently struck in a secondary incident involving another passenger vehicle,” police wrote.

The driver of the SUV, who police only identified as a 40-year-old woman from Mississauga, was transported to hospital by Peel paramedics where she was later pronounced dead.

It’s unclear if anyone else was injured in the crash.

As a result, officials said they had to close the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 at Eglinton Avenue West to allow officers to investigate the scene further.

Those closures were in place for “several hours,” officers noted.

Police are asking anyone with additional information or video of the fatal collision to contact the OPP.
