Ontario’s police watchdog say it is investigating after a 34-year-old man died Monday night in North York while police were present.
It happened at an apartment building in the area of York Gate Boulevard and Jane Street.
Toronto police officers arrived at the building, knocked on the man’s door and spoke with him before informing him he was under arrest.
The man then went back inside the unit and closed the door, the SIU said in a news release.
A short time later, officers were informed that an individual had fallen from an apartment unit to the ground below, according to the release.
The man was taken to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Special Investigations Unit is an independent civilian agency that investigates the conduct of police officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, allegations of sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a individual.
