The Moose Jaw Humane Society (MJHS) has named an adoptable cat after Toronto Blue Jays’ pitcher Max Scherzer because it shares the same rare condition as the major league star: heterochromia.

“Much like his famous namesake, Max Scherzer has a look that stops people in their tracks. This handsome white cat sports stunning heterochromia — one blue eye and one green eye — making him truly one of a kind,” the humane society said in a social media post Thursday.

“Max is more than just good looks. He is a sweet, curious boy who enjoys keeping an eye on everything happening around him (with BOTH eyes, of course). Whether he is lounging in a sunny window, investigating your groceries, or accepting well-deserved head scratches, Max is ready to become the MVP of his new home.”

Heterochromia is a rare condition where an individual’s irises differ in color, either completely or partially.

Scherzer, the pitcher, famously has a brown left eye, while his right eye is blue.

The 41-year-old right-hander has pitched in the major leagues for 19 seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, Texas Rangers and Toronto, sporting a 222-120 record, 3.26 ERA and 3,499 career strikeouts.

He’s won the Cy Young Award three times, being recognized as the best pitcher in the American League in 2013 with Detroit and then in the National League in 2016 and 2017 with Washington. He’s an eight-time all-star and has won the World Series twice, with the Nationals and Texas.

Scherzer’s lore and personality was thrust in the limelight during the Blue Jays’ 2025 World Series run against the Seattle Mariners in the ALCS.

Manager John Schneider attempted to pull Scherzer from Game 4 of the series, but Scherzer screamed “Yeah, I’m good! Let’s go!” and after a brief but intense stare, Schneider left the mound with Scherzer still in the game.

Meanwhile, Max Scherzer the cat, is in search of a forever family.

“Max is looking for a family who will appreciate both his unique appearance and his loving personality. We have a feeling this superstar won’t stay on the free agent list for long,” MJHS added.

Max Scherzer, again the cat, has an adoption fee of $75. The human society says he is neutered, started on his vaccination schedule and microchipped.
