A 27-year-old man is dead after being shot just steps from his North York home late Friday night, Toronto police say.
The shooting happened shortly after 10 p.m. in the area of Sheppard Avenue West and Magellan Drive, just east of Jane Street.
When officers arrived, they say they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. He was then rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where officials say he later died.
Speaking to reporters Saturday, Homicide Unit Sgt. Jason Davis said the victim was returning home when he was shot.

“This gentleman was steps from his home. He was returning home. I have no indication whatsoever that he had any interaction with the suspects at this point in time,” Davis said. “This gentleman tragically was almost home.”
It remains unclear whether the suspects shot from a passing vehicle or on foot.
Police say they are still working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and have not confirmed whether the victim was targeted.

“We’re very, very early in this investigation,” Davis added.
Police emphasize that they are searching for three suspects who were travelling in a dark-coloured vehicle.
Officers remained in the area canvassing for surveillance video and speaking with potential witnesses.
“This 27-year-old man tragically lost his life last night, and every little bit of information matters,” Davis said.
