Fatal garbage truck crash caused heavy delays on WB Hwy. 401 in Pickering: OPP

One person has died after a single-vehicle collision on Highway 401 in Durham Region.

Highway 401 westbound at Whites Road in Pickering reopened as of 4:45 p.m. on Sunday, Ontario Provincial Police said on X, after a fatal involving a garbage truck.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the collision occurred near Whites Road at around 7 a.m.

Police said the driver, a 44-year-old man, was ejected from the garbage truck and was later pronounced dead in hospital.

The accident closed down the westbound collectors lane at Whites Road in Pickering for much of the day, causing delays in the area.

Officers are still trying to determine the cause of the collision.
