Police say there are heavy delays on the westbound Hwy. 401 after a fatal collision in the westbound collector lanes.

Police say the westbound collector lanes of Highway 401 in Pickering will likely remain closed until this afternoon following a fatal crash involving a garbage truck.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the collision occurred near Whites Road at around 7 a.m.

“We have a rolled over garbage-hauler that’s on its side, blocking the westbound collector lanes just approaching Port Union,” Schmidt told CP24.

“We do have one fatality there as well that we are investigation and another person in hospital with injuries.”

He said officers are still trying to determine the cause of the collision.

“A big headache for traffic in that area. The express lanes are unaffected by heavy delays in that area,” Schmidt said.

Collector lanes are closed at Whites Road, the OPP said.
