Three people injured, multiple homes evacuated after Markham house fire

York Regional police say three people are injured, two seriously, after a fire broke out at a home in Markham Friday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the scene near Carleton and Kennedy roads at approximately 6:45 a.m.

Images from the scene show that the fire has spread to at least one other home and multiple residences in the area have been evacuated.

Police said that three occupants were transported to hospital, two of whom have serious injuries. One person’s injuries are considered minor.

All occupants of the affected homes are accounted for, they said.

“When our crews arrived on scene, heavy smoke and fire from the first floor. One victim had been either removed by family members or had managed to self-evacuate,” Markham Fire Chief Chris Nearing told CP24, adding that the two other injured parties were removed by fire crews and placed into the care of paramedics.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

A spokesperson for York police told CP24 that there’s nothing to indicate that the fire is suspicious.

Carlton Road is closed on both sides of Chambery Crescent, police added.

A spokesperson said that the Office of the Fire Marshal will be attending the scene.
