The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a man who fled police was seriously injured in a collision near Peterborough on Friday morning.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said Peterborough police got a call shortly after 11 a.m. for an erratic driver operating a Dodge Charger on Tupper Street in Cavan-Monaghan.

One officer saw the vehicle and tried to stop it, activating his lights and sirens, the SIU said.

However, the driver fled. The SIU said the officer followed the vehicle “for a time.”

A short time later, the driver was involved in multiple collisions and ended up in the ditch on County Road 10, south of Highway 115.

He was airlifted to a Toronto hospital with critical injuries, according to Ornge.

The SIU has assigned three investigators and two forensic investigators to the case as well as designated one subject official and two witness officials.
