It will soon be more expensive to take public transit in York Region.

York Region Transit fares are set to go up by eight to 15 cents, depending on the fare category, as of July 1.

The three per cent fare increase was previously approved as part of the York Region budget in November, 2025 and is intended to “help cover rising operating costs due to high inflation,” officials say.

The cash, credit or debit fare will increase from $4.50 to $4.65 while adults using Presto will see a 12 cent increase (from $4.12 to $4.24).

Youth fares for those ages 13 to 19 will go up by a dime to $3.29 when paid with Presto while senior fares and fares for children ages six to 12 will rise eight cents to $2.60 when paid with Presto.

Kids five and under will continue to ride free on York Region Transit.

York Region Transits says that the fare increase will also help it continuing to make investments aimed at improving service, including a plan to purchase a new fleet of electric buses with support from the federal government.

“Fare changes help cover the rising operating costs due to high inflation and help support the cost of delivering service to the Region,” their website notes.
