Durham police say an Oshawa, Ont., man allegedly drugged and sexually assaulted a victim who moved to Canada to care for his children and investigators are concerned there may be additional victims.
In a news release, police said the victim contacted a couple with several children on a Facebook au pair group in 2025 to come to Canada to work “informally” as a live-in caregiver.
Police tell CTV News that the victim moved from Belgium to Canada in December of that year and lived with the suspect and his spouse in exchange for providing child care.
Police said that on Dec. 12, the suspect gave the victim ice cream, and that soon after consuming it she felt incoherent and eventually blacked out. She had no recollection of that night, police said.
“The victim sought medical attention and it was later confirmed that a noxious drug was present in her system,” police said.
Investigators executed a search warrant at the suspect’s Oshawa home, where they reportedly found several “electronic devices” as well as the same drug used in the Dec. 12 offence.
Evidence of child sexual abuse and exploitation material were also found.
The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Derek Stephen Bellamy, was charged with sexual assault, administering a noxious substances, five counts each of voyeurism and possessing a recording obtained by voyeurism, possessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material and accessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material.
Police released a picture of Bellamy on Thursday and said investigators are concerned there may be other victims.
“Anyone with information about this or similar incidents is asked to contact Det. Dunbar of the Special Victims Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5344,” police said.
