Toronto police say they intercepted an unauthorized drone near the FIFA Fan Festival in Fort York on Wednesday night.

Officers detected the drone in the area of Niagara and Tecumseth Streets, a few metres away from the Fan Festival site.

After the drone was intercepted, police say they charged an individual under the Canadian Aviation Regulations.

Police are reminding the public that unauthorized drones are not permitted around the stadium, team sites, Fan Festival and other secured areas.

Hundreds gathered at the FIFA Fan Festival on Wednesday night for the countdown concert. It featured performances by Bryan Adams, Norah Fatehi with Sanjoy and Vegedream, and AHI & Wyclef Jean.

The World Cup begins on Thursday in Mexico. Meanwhile, Canada will open the tournament at Toronto Stadium on Friday afternoon.
