Police have made one arrest after a person drove the wrong way on Highway 401 while impaired, resulting in a multi-vehicle collision near Kipling Avenue.

A driver has been arrested for impaired driving after a two-vehicle collision on Highway 401 in Etobicoke on Sunday morning.

Police later told CTV News Toronto that the driver who was charged was travelling the wrong way when they struck another vehicle, which caught fire.

That unnamed motorist has also been charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm. The charges have not been tested in court.

Two people were seriously injured, but their lives are not considered to be in danger, they said.

Paramedics initially said they assessed three people at the scene.

The crash resulted in the temporary closure of all eastbound lanes of Highway 401 at Kipling Avenue as well as the on-ramp from Dixon Road. Drivers were advised to avoid the area during the closure as traffic was being rerouted.

The investigation is ongoing.
