In a statement to CTV News, a spokesperson on behalf of the City of Toronto said officials are "working closely" with the Ministry of the Environment on cleanup efforts in the park.

Efforts are underway to clean up a diesel spill at Mimico Creek in Etobicoke after oil was found in the park on Sunday evening, the City of Toronto says.

In an email to CTV News Toronto, a city spokesperson confirmed that emergency crews were deployed to last night in the area of Legion Road and Manitoba Street, south of the Gardiner Expressway and west of Park Lawn Road, last night to contain the spill.

Workers used absorbent booms, floating tubes that “trap” and “soak in the diesel,” the city said.

“We are working closely with the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) on cleanup efforts and an investigation into the source and cause”, the city said in a written statement.

No reported impacts to local wildlife, according to Ministry

In a statement to CTV News, Lindsay Davidson, a media relations advisor with the MECP said that ministry personnel attended to the area Sunday evening to assess for potential environmental impacts and said the spill was likely the result of a “one time release from material captured in the storm sewer system”.

“No impacts to fish or aquatic wildlife have been observed,” Davidson added.

In 2023, the Toronto Wildlife Centre rescued 84 birds from Mimico Creek after runoff from a massive fire at Brenntag Canada, a chemical distribution company, caused an oil spill that affected local waterways.
