Environment Canada has issued an orange alert for a wide swath of southern Ontario ahead of the arrival of a prolonged heat wave that it says could bring temperatures of up to 37 C.
The weather agency issued the alert late on Monday afternoon. The alert covers an area spanning all the way from Windsor to Belleville.
Environment Canada says that a “long duration heat event” will begin Tuesday and last until the weekend.
It says that maximum temperatures will range from 31 C to 34 C and potentially go as high as 37 C “in some areas.”
“The hottest days are expected to be Wednesday and Thursday, with maximum temperatures of 34 to 37 degrees Celsius expected. Minimum temperatures of 21 to 25 degrees Celsius will provide little relief from the heat,” the alert states. “Take action to protect yourself and others – extreme heat can affect everyone’s health."
On Tuesday, the temperature will reach 33 C but feel like 42 with the humidity, Environment Canada says.
It will then get even hotter mid-week with daytime highs of 35 C in the forecast for Wednesday and Thursday.
Environment Canada is forecasting a mix of sun and cloud for the majority of the week, though it says there is a 40 per cent chance of showers with the risk of thunderstorms on Tuesday and a 30 per cent chance of showers for Canada Day on Wednesday.
The heat will ease as of Sunday but not by much with a daytime high of 28 C still expected.
