A man has been arrested after an unprovoked assault in North York on Tuesday afternoon that is being investigated as a suspected hate-motivated incident.
Shortly after 12 p.m., police allege the suspect, without provocation, approached the victim in the area of Jane Street and Lawrence Avenue West.
Police allege the suspect began yelling anti-Israeli slurs at the victim and then picked up rocks, repeatedly throwing them at the victim while uttering death threats.
The victim suffered minor injuries.
Police said they believe the victim was targeted because they were wearing religious attire when they were assaulted.
Ten minutes later, at 12:20 p.m., police arrested Abdulkadir Al-Jelani, 58, of Toronto.
He was charged with multiple offences, including three counts of assault with a weapon and one count of uttering death threats.
The charges have not been tested in court.
He is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
