An Oshawa man is facing several charges after he allegedly brandished a knife and assaulted a female who had attempted to intervene in a dispute.

It happened at around 10:30 a.m. on July 4 in the area of King Street and Simcoe Street.

Police say a man was involved in a physical dispute with another man over a cell phone. During the altercation, police say the suspect displayed a knife and assaulted an unrelated woman as she was trying to stop the dispute. Several people in the area intervened and held the suspect until police showed up and took him into custody.

The female victim sustained minor injuries.

Police say the 41-year-old Faraz Mubashar was on weapons prohibition conditions at the time of the incident.

He is currently facing several charges, including assault with a weapon and failure to comply with a release order.

The suspect was held for a bail hearing, police say.

Police are asking anyone with cellphone, dashcam, surveillance footage or information about the incident to reach out to investigators.
