Toronto Police corruption case involving Barrie father and son fast-tracked

The Project South police corruption case that included a Barrie father and son, is headed for the Superior Court of Justice.

The Toronto police corruption case, involving eight officers and several alleged members of organized crime groups, is headed for the Superior Court of Justice after a direct indictment was approved by the Ministry of the Attorney General in Toronto.

The Crown said it has filed direct indictments in the Project South police corruption case that included father and son John Madeley Sr. and Jr. of Barrie who are accused of working with organized crime groups that are alleged to have targeted a senior correctional officer.

Lawyers for the accused appeared in a Toronto courtroom Tuesday morning to confirm they aware the case is moving directly to the Superior Court.

Typically, cases proceed to a preliminary hearing in the Ontario Court of Justice before preparing for trial.

Madeley Sr.’s longtime Toronto Police Service colleague Timothy Barnhardt, 56, appeared in court by video from jail in at Central East Correctional Centre in Lindsay.

Barnhardt was denied bail twice, including a review in April. He is facing 17 charges, the most of any of the accused, including leaking confidential information to criminals.

Madeley Sr., 55, recently retired from Toronto Police after nearly 30 years of service.

He is accused of breach of trust, several counts of unauthorized use of a computer, firearm charges, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5000 following an investigation by York and South Simcoe police officers.

He was first charged in January, accused of using threats and violence to collect debts from clients in what York police described as an illegal online gambling ring.

Madeley Jr. is 29 and became a Toronto Police officer in 2022.

He is accused of breach of trust and unauthorized use of a computer. The Madeleys are out of custody. Madeley Jr. is now suspended without pay.

Ryan Cribbie, 33, of Barrie is accused of conspiracy to commit extortion and two counts of careless storage of a firearm.

Social media photos show Cribbie wearing a Brink’s armed guard uniform and in older photos he is dressed in a patched leather vest beside a motorcycle.

Cribbie is also out of custody.

24-year-old Keajean Doman of Innisfil remains behind bars.

He is charged with attempted murder. Police say Doman is part of a gang who tried to kill the corrections officer.

He is accused of being linked to eight shootings from mid-August to early September 2025 in Vaughan, Brampton and London.

The accused are scheduled to appear in Toronto Superior Court in September.

The allegations against them have not been tested in court.
