A man in his 20s is dead after an e-scooter collided with a vehicle in Toronto’s west end early Friday morning.
Toronto police say the collision happened shortly after 8 a.m. near Dufferin Street and Bloor Street West, outside Dufferin Mall.
Speaking to reporters, Traffic Services Insp. Dan Pravica said the victim was riding an e-scooter southbound on Dufferin Street when he was struck by a northbound vehicle that was making a left turn into the mall.
The rider, believed to be in his mid-to-late 20s, was taken to hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries but later died, Pravica noted.

He said the driver remained at the scene and that there is no information at this time on whether charges will be laid.
Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or has dash camera footage to come forward as investigators continue to determine what happened.
Pravica also thanked members of the public who rushed to help the victim before emergency crews arrived.

He noted that police have seen an increase in collisions involving e-scooters and e-bikes as their use has become more widespread across the city in recent years.
“We have seen an increase both in the accidents, but also in the enforcement aspect,” Pravica said, noting officers issued roughly 600 tickets related to e-scooters and e-bikes in 2024, with that number nearly doubling last year.
“Regardless of who’s right or wrong or at fault, the pedestrian or the cyclist or e-scooter rider is going to take the biggest brunt of the injury,” he said.
As a result of today’s collision, Dufferin Street remains closed between Bloor Street West and Sylvan Avenue.
