Man arrested for multiple firearms charges after asking police for change in North York

On Monday, police arrested Theron Sutherland, 20, of Toronto, and seized a handgun loaded with 16 rounds of ammunition.

A man is facing numerous firearms-related charges after allegedly approaching police officers and asking them for change Monday afternoon in North York.

Police say officers were sitting in a marked cruiser near Jane Street and Shoreham Drive when the suspect approached them and asked for 50 cents.

The suspect then walked into a nearby restaurant, that is when officers recognized the suspect who was already wanted on two outstanding warrants.

Officers then arrested the suspect, who police say was carrying a handgun loaded with 16 rounds of ammunition.

Following the arrest, officers executed a search warrant at an apartment near Jane Street and Driftwood Avenue. Police say they seized an additional 26 rounds of ammunition, a master vehicle key and a stolen Ontario licence plate.

Theron Sutherland, 20, of Toronto, is charged with multiple offences, including unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and carrying a concealed weapon.

The charges have not been tested in court.
