A woman is dead after a stabbing in North York on Saturday.

Officers say at around 2:30 p.m., they responded to reports of a person with a knife in a residential building at Fairview Mall Drive and Don Mills Road.

When they arrived, they found the victim who had been stabbed in a hallway of the building.

Police say she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Inspector Dan Pravica with Toronto Police said the victim’s next of kin was still being notified but described her as being in her “late 20s or early 30s.”

The male suspect fled the area before police arrived and is still outstanding.

While there was initial concern that the suspect was still within the building, police have verified that he is no longer there. Police have not released details of the suspect’s description.

Homicide and Missing Persons Unit has taken over the investigation.

Residents inside the building were told to shelter in place for some time. Some are being allowed back into the building if they check in with the front desk.

The mother of one of the residents who was outside the building told CP24 that her daughter was quite nervous. The woman called the experience “unnerving” and counted 25 police cruisers in the area.

Through her mom’s cell phone, the daughter told CP24 that she heard on the building’s intercom that residents should stay inside their apartments and not leave.

“I’m okay and staying in and I’m happy I have my mom nearby,” she said.

This is a breaking news story. More details to come.
