Toronto police have identified a Brampton man who has been charged with first-degree murder after a woman was fatally shot during a “targeted” attack in Etobicoke early Friday morning.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting shortly after 7 a.m. in the area of Humberwood and Rexdale boulevards.
In a news release, police allege the victim and the suspect were having a “brief interaction” when the suspect shot the woman.
Life-saving measures were performed, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim has now been identified as 26-year-old Navneet Kaur of Toronto.
Police say the suspect fled before officers arrived. Following the investigation, officials say officers with the Ontario Provincial Police were the ones who located and arrested the suspect.
Sharnjeet Singh, 37, of Brampton, has been charged with first-degree murder and failing to comply with an undertaking.
He was scheduled to appear in court Saturday morning at the Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto.
Earlier in the day on Friday, Duty Insp. Scott Bradbury noted investigators believed the woman had been specifically “targeted” and that there was no ongoing risk to the public.
“We feel that this is a localized issue, meaning that this woman was targeted, and that there’s no extra risk to the neighbors,” Bradbury said at the time.
A witness who was drinking coffee nearby told CP24 he saw a man approach the woman and speak with her briefly before opening fire.
“I saw a guy talking to her a little bit like for 30 seconds… then he shot the girl, and he walked away to the southbound of (Hwy.) 427, that’s what I saw," he said.
The witness said the shooting has shaken his sense of safety in the neighbourhood.
“I’ve lived here for about six, seven years… I think it was really safe here, but I don’t think it’s safe now," he said.
In the release, officials say Kaur’s death marks Toronto’s 22nd homicide of 2026.
