Heavy rainfall is expected for swaths of Ontario over the long weekend, including in the Greater Toronto Area and Cottage Country.

Environment Canada has posted a special weather statement for Toronto and surrounding areas, warning of heavy, localized rainfall in showers and thunderstorms that could possibly exceed 50 mm.

The downpour is expected to start overnight Saturday or early Sunday morning, and end on Sunday evening. Heavy rain will likely pool on roads and low-lying areas and could impact visibility at times, the federal agency said.

In the Muskoka region of Bracebridge – Gravenhurst, localized heavy rainfall in the form of showers and thunderstorms is expected Saturday afternoon and into the evening, amounting to 50 to 80 mm. More rainfall is possible for Sunday.
