Toronto police have charged a suspect with first-degree murder following a 2022 shooting at a Scarborough parking lot which left a man dead.
In a news release, investigators announced that 39-year-old Toronto resident Justin Longshaw was arrested on Monday in connection with the death of 31-year-old Ding Ping Wang, who was shot and killed while he was sitting in his vehicle.
The case had remained cold until police released surveillance video last month which showed a suspect at the scene the day before the Nov. 12, 2022 shooting at a plaza near Midland and Passmore avenues.
Det.-Sgt. Sajeev Nair told reporters during a news conference that the footage had recently come to the attention of investigators after a witness came forward about a suspicious person on the property before the murder.
Investigators said at the time that they believed the suspect was conducting “reconnaissance” before carrying out the shooting a day later.
They said they believe Wang was targeted, but that the motive remains unclear. Wang was described by police as a father who owned a kitchen cabinet business and was not involved in gangs or a “high-risk criminal lifestyle.”
“He was simply going about his day when his life was taken from him,” Nair said.
An artist rendering of a suspect was released by police in an effort to identify him.
Weeks later, police revealed that they had linked the same suspect, who they believed went by the name “Jay,” to another shooting at the same Scarborough parking lot on March 10, 2023.
Video of that incident was released to the public and showed an unnamed victim entering a parked vehicle at the plaza. Moments after starting the car, the suspect exited the backdoor of an adjacent vehicle and began firing as the victim drove off.
Police said they are still investigating the suspect’s alleged connection to the attempted murder on March 10.
Longshaw is scheduled to appear in a courtroom to answer for the charge on Tuesday.
