New video has surfaced of a vehicle being recovered from a sinkhole in East York, after city officials say the driver drove onto a part of roadway that was compromised by a broken watermain.
In a statement to CTV News, Bill Shea, director of distribution and collection of Toronto Water, said crews were called to the city’s Parkview Hills neighbourhood, near O’Connor Drive and St. Clair Avenue East, Monday for reports that a watermain had broken.
Several road closures were put into effect as crews worked to shut down the affected valves. However, Shea said, at one point a vehicle drove over a stretch of roadway that had been “undermined” by the watermain break and “broke through the asphalt.”
“Toronto Police Service attended the scene, and a tow was dispatched to remove the vehicle,” he said.
A local resident who submitted the video to CTV News said the first attempt to remove the vehicle, which appears to be a Honda CR-V SUV, from the water-filled hole was unsuccessful.
The second attempt, which was caught on video, shows the vehicle being dragged out of the pit as a substantial amount of water pours out of its front grill.
It’s unclear if the driver sustained any injuries.
Shea said crews remain in the area to complete the repairs on the broken watermain.
“We appreciate the public’s patience and co-operation as crews work to safely complete the repairs and reopen the roadway.”
