Drivers might want to hold off on filling their tanks until Friday, when one gas analyst predicts prices will drop by seven cents a litre.
Dan McTeague, head of Canadians for Affordable Energy, tells CP24 that after a one-cent bump in costs overnight, the price will fall to 180.9 cents per litre by Friday.
“This sets the stage for next week’s seven-cent drop around Sept. 17, when refiners switch to cheaper blend winter gasoline,” McTeague wrote in an email.
While there is a reprieve on the cost of gasoline, motorists who use diesel aren’t as lucky.
After easing up over the long weekend, McTeague says prices are expected to resume their “record-setting pace” on Friday when the cost will rise by nine cents to 245.9 cents per litre.
The prices at the pumps at this same time last year were significantly less, McTeague noted, as gasoline was selling for 143.9 cents a litre. Diesel was 92 cents less per litre, hovering at around 153.9, he added.
“The near doubling of the price of diesel, sustained and likely to go higher with colder temps will undoubtedly fuel inflation throughout the entire economy,” said McTeague.
