Video shows the moments police apprehended five suspects linked to a failed jewelry store robbery in Markham over the weekend.
York Regional Police (YRP) said they were called to a jewelry store in the area of Denison Street and Kennedy Road at around 5:30 p.m.
Police say they saw two suspicious vehicles: one that worked as a look-out, the other to drop the suspects off. The suspects were seen carrying sledgehammers and garbage bags when they walked up to the jewelry store, but they could not get inside as the business was closed for the day.
In the video, released by YRP on Wednesday, an officer can be heard informing her colleagues that the suspects have left the store and are walking through the parking lot with garbage bags in their hands.
“Three males, one’s wearing a puffy coat, all have hoods up,” the officer can be heard saying, as the infrared video pans over the area.
A vehicle can then be seen driving at a slower rate before grinding to a halt to pick up the suspects off the side of the road.
As the last person piles into the backseat of the car, what appears to be four police cruisers boxes the suspects in and gunshots start to fire.
Video shows the suspects start running in various directions. One bolts towards the building while two others run down the sidewalk, officers chasing after them all.
“Custody in the lot there. The other one is in custody under a tree near to where the Civic had parked on the south side of the building,” an officer can be heard saying before the camera zooms in on police taking down one of the suspects.
Police said they brought five suspects into custody, seized a replica firearm and recovered a stolen vehicle.
Twenty-seven-year-old Numan Khan, 21-year-old Tyrese Morgan and three teenage boys, ranging in age from 14 to 17 years old, are facing charges in connection with the incident. Morgan, the 15-year-old and 17-year-old were on release orders for unrelated offences, police say.
Police cannot release the identities of the teenagers under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The charges have not been tested in court.
One suspect remains at large. Police did not provide any details about the outstanding suspect.
YRP reminds businesses to stay alert, install and maintain security systems, and consider locking doors and using a buzz-in system at night or if there are valuables on site.
The investigation remains ongoing.
