Three men from Chile have been arrested after a failed carjacking in the Township of King in York Region last month.
York Regional Police (YRP) say officers responded to an attempted carjacking on Jan. 9 near King Road and Highway 27.
Police say the victim had been driving on King Road when their vehicle was rear-ended by the suspect vehicle.
As the victim exited their vehicle, two suspects wearing face coverings approached and at least one had a gun, police say.
The suspects then attempted to steal the vehicle but failed, according to police, and instead fled with other items belonging to the victim.
Police say that on Feb. 5, officers executed four search warrants at two residences in Toronto and two suspects were charged.
One day later, the third suspect was intercepted by the Department of Homeland Security in Houston, Texas. He was sent back to Toronto and arrested by Canadian Border Service agents before being handed over to YRP.
Twenty-five-year-old Kevin Espinoza Rojas, 22-year-old Martin Tapia Gonazlez, and 22-year-old Carlos Carvajal Moya – all from Chile – have been charged with armed robbery, stolen property, and unlawful use of a credit card. Moya is also charged with possession of an electronic device for motor vehicle theft. The charges have not been tested in court.
