The Ontario government has taken a big step forward on the controversial Bradford Bypass by awarding contracts to move ahead with detailed design work for the central and east parts of the new highway.

The Bradford Bypass is a planned 16-kilometre, four-lane highway that will link Highway 404 in the east to Highway 400 in the west. Officials say it will cut travel times across York Region and Simcoe County.

“The investments being made in the Bradford Bypass and surrounding infrastructure will help reduce gridlock, support economic growth, and get families home approximately 30 minutes faster,” stated Bradford Mayor James Leduc.

Officials say building the highway will create more than 2,200 jobs each year and add $286 million annually to Ontario’s economy.

“Our government is investing in important highway infrastructure to support the economy and keep goods and people moving, especially in one of the fastest-growing areas of the Greater Golden Horseshoe,” said Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria.

Officials say work is well underway on the western section of the bypass, including building a temporary detour to prepare for a future bridge and interchange. According to the province, tree clearing has been done to make way for utility work and construction. Meanwhile, a new southbound lane on Highway 400 is being built to connect to the bypass.

The project has faced years of debate and opposition from some groups concerned about environmental impacts. But supporters say the bypass is long overdue and will relieve traffic headaches for residents.

“Recent research shows congestion is costing Ontario roughly $56.4 billion every year in combined economic and social impacts, underscoring the need for strategic highway investments that keep people and goods moving,” noted Steven Crombie with the Ontario Road Builders’ Association.

There is no confirmed completion date for the project.
