York Regional Police say a man who lied about being carjacked after hitting and killing a 16-year-old on a mini-bike in Vaughan last year has been sentenced to five years in prison.

The sentence for 25-year-old Harnoor Chauhan was handed down on Monday, police said.

According to police, at around 10:45 p.m. on May 21, 2024, officers were called to a collision near Martin Grove Road and Jackman Crescent.

A 16-year-old, police said, was operating a mini-bike when he was struck by a white Mercedes-Benz that subsequently fled the area. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Shortly after the collision, police were called to a nearby location in the area of Forest Drive and Dunstan Crescent, where the driver of the Mercedes-Benz reported that his vehicle had been carjacked,” police said in a news release issued Tuesday.

“Following a thorough investigation, officers determined the carjacking was a false report and the complainant was identified as the driver involved in the fatal hit-and-run.”

He was charged with dangerous driving causing death, failing to stop after an accident causing death, and public mischief. Police said the accused pleaded guilty to the charges in September of this year.

On Monday, Chauhan, a resident of Vaughan, was sentenced to five years along with a 15-year-old driving prohibition.
