York Regional Police are investigating after two masked suspects fired multiple shots at a parked vehicle and smashed its windows at a Vaughan home early Sunday morning.
Officials say the shooting happened sometime overnight though residents in the area tell CP24 they heard shots at around 4:30 a.m. in the area of Madeira Avenue and Genoa Road.
No injuries were reported.
Surveillance video shared with CP24 at the scene appears to show a dark grey Honda Civic arriving at 4:33 a.m.
Two masked suspects wearing dark clothing get out of the vehicle, with one smashing the rear windows of the car while the other fires several shots at the driver’s side door and later at all four tires.
One resident, tells CP24 that some neighbours were awoken by the sound of gunfire, while some only learned what happened after being alerted by other neighbours.
Investigators say one suspect is described as heavy-set and was wearing a black hat and a dark coat, adding that the Firearms Investigation Team is leading the investigation.
In a statement, Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca condemned the shooting.
“This activity is completely unacceptable in Vaughan or in any other community for that matter,” Del Duca said.
“I have been in touch with York Regional Police this morning and their investigation is ongoing. We need our federal and provincial partners to work together to toughen penalties, keep criminals behind bars and deliver real punishment for those who break the law.”
Neighbours say there is a growing desire in the community to push for action, including possibly reaching out to city officials and the mayor’s office to find ways to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Police are warning residents to expect a large police presence in the area as the investigation continues and are asking the public to avoid the area if possible.
Anyone with additional information is urged to contact York Regional Police as soon as possible.
