Police say a 65-year-old York Region resident has now been identified as the victim of Monday’s deadly daylight shooting in Vaughan.
Officers were called to the area of Winges and Rowntree Dairy roads shortly after 1 p.m. for reports of multiple shots fired at a commercial plaza.
A man was found in front of a local business suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, police said.
He was rushed to hospital but later died of his injuries.
Police have now identified the victim as Sergio Lopes, of Richmond Hill.
Investigators say the incident is believed to be “targeted.”
As officers were investigating the shooting, police received a call about a black SUV on fire in Kipling Avenue, north of Woodbridge Avenue. The SUV matched the description of a vehicle that fled the area of the shooting. Investigators said they have now confirmed that the SUV was in fact the same vehicle that fled the scene.
The vehicle was unoccupied at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.
Police have not provided any details on possible suspects.
“Any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police, or anyone who may have security video from the area is asked to come forward,” York Regional Police said in a news release issued Wednesday.
