A massive sinkhole that developed in Markham has now been repaired days after it formed, according to York Region officials.

Last Wednesday, Warden Avenue, south of Major Mackenzie Drive, was closed in both directions due to the sinkhole.

Melissa Pinto, a spokesperson for the Region of York, which is responsible for the street, told CP24 that their staff noticed a road depression on Tuesday following consecutive nights of heavy rain.

That kind of precipitation can soak in the ground and weaken or wash away the soil underneath, Pinto explained, which may lead to a sinkhole to form.

“Since then, the condition has worsened and a sinkhole has formed,” Pinto said in a statement on April 1.

On Monday, Pinto confirmed Warden Avenue from 16th Avenue to Major Mackenzie Drive is now open.

“We thank the community for their patience while we completed this vital road repair,” Pinto said.
