A pedestrian has died after being struck by a GO train in Richmond Hill on Friday night.

York Regional Police say they got a call about the incident at a railway crossing in the area of Elgin Mills and Newkirk Roads, north of Richmond Hill GO station, shortly after 6 p.m.

When emergency services arrived, they located a pedestrian with critical injuries. Police say the pedestrian was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.

York Regional Police media relations officer Const. Kevin Nebrija said CN Rail police will be taking charge of the investigation.

He noted that the circumstances around the incident were not suspicious.

Passengers on the last two northbound trains had to take shuttle buses from Richmond Hill GO to Gormley and Bloomington GO stations.
