The SIU is investigating after a man was sent to a trauma centre following an interaction with police on Purcell Crescent.

York Regional Police say the province’s police watchdog has invoked its mandate following an interaction between officers and a male in Vaughan late Sunday night.

According to police, the incident occurred in the area of Purcell Crescent, near Drummond Drive and Keele Street, at around 10 p.m.

“We responded to a check welfare call on Purcell Crescent in Vaughan. On arrival, a motorcyclist was observed who then fled,” police said in an email to CP24.

“A short distance away, a single-vehicle collision occurred involving the motorcyclist. The motorcyclist, an adult male, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a trauma centre.”

Police said the Canine Unit was brought in to assist with an evidence search “as a result of the interaction” with officers.

“There are no outstanding subjects in relation to this investigation,” police said.

The man was taken to a trauma centre and is currently listed in non-life-threatening condition.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is now probing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Purcell Crescent is closed to traffic during the investigation.
