York Regional Police are searching for a 49-year-old man from Richmond Hill after he allegedly scammed multiple Spanish-speaking newcomers into buying vehicles before “ceasing communication” earlier this year.

In a news release, investigators say between January and May 2026, they looked into a suspects who “posed as a licensed vehicle salesperson and posted advertisements on social media aimed at Spanish-speaking new Canadians.”

It’s alleged that the suspect met victims in person and showed them vehicles that were either in the possession of legitimate dealerships or advertised online. Police add he then obtained victims’ financial information and accepted cash down payments before cutting off communication and ghosting his victims.

Investigators believe the suspect used industry contacts to help facilitate the frauds, including borrowing office space to meet with victims.

As a result, Duglas Rodriguez, 49, of Richmond Hill, is wanted on charges of:

  • Fraud under $5,000
  • False pretence
  • Theft under $5,000
  • Possession of property obtained by crime

Police say they have been unable to locate him and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. They also add that “the accused is encouraged to seek legal advice and turn himself in.”

Police are also reminding the public that anyone who assists him could face criminal charges.

Anyone with information is asked to contact York police.
