York Regional Police have released video showing the moment unmarked cruisers boxed in a stolen vehicle in Aurora and arrested the 23-year-old driver on Thursday.

The video was taken by YRP’s air support unit, which followed the grey Ford Edge, after an officer on patrol near Yonge Street and Elm Grove Avenue received an alert from their Automated Licence Plate Recognition camera indicating the vehicle had been reported stolen.

In the video, the vehicle is caught running a red light at Steeplechase Avenue and going 80 km/h in a residential area.

Police decided to stop the vehicle in the intersection of St. John’s Sideroad and Industrial Parkway South.

“Move, move, move,” an officer is heard saying on the radio as the Ford Edge travels the intersection.

Several unmarked vehicles are seen surrounding the vehicle, including one that struck it from behind.

“They’ve got the vehicle contained,” an officer says.

“They’ve got the driver out, and he is being taken into custody.”

In a news release on Friday, police identified the driver as 23-year-old Kyvam Aghakhani Barfeh of Barrie.

He has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, dangerous operation, two counts of breach of probation and three counts of operation of a conveyance while prohibited.

Police said the Ford Edge was stolen on Wednesday in Barrie.
