A man has been sentenced to life in prison with no eligibility for parole for 25 years after a nightclub shooting in Vaughan that left two people dead and another person seriously injured.
The shooting took place at the ATL Lounge in the area of Highway 7 and Keele Street on July 23, 2022, at about 3:30 a.m.
Investigators said a fight broke out inside the lounge before the shooting.
Two security guards, 25-year-old Tosin Amos-Arowoshegbe and 22-year-old Chibueze Momah, were killed as a result.
A 20-year-old woman was also injured in the shooting and suffered serious injuries but survived, police said in Monday’s news release.
Following the shooting, members of the York Regional Police homicide unit, the U.S. Marshals Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police began an investigation and issued a Canada-wide warrant for Kensworth Alton Francis.
Nearly two years later on March 24, 2024, Francis was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service in Hartford, Conn., and later extradited to York Region to stand trial.
A jury found Francis guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of unlawfully causing bodily harm. He was sentenced at the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket.
Francis received two life sentences for the murder convictions, with no eligibility for parole for 25 years. He also received an additional eight-year sentence for unlawfully causing bodily harm. All sentences are to be served concurrently.
