One person has died following a collision that resulted in a power outage that affected more than 6,000 customers in Markham Thursday afternoon.
The incident occurred near McCowan Road and Highway 7, where police said they responded to reports of an injured person.
Alectra Utilities reported an outage shortly afterward.
The affected area stretched diagonally from Highway 7 south toward Steeles Avenue East, bounded by Kennedy Road to the west and McCowan Road to the east. The outage also affected major routes, including 14th Avenue and Highway 407.
A total of 6,252 customers were affected at the peak of the outage. As of 3:48 p.m., there are still 23 customers without power.
There is no current estimated full restoration time.
In a statement to CTV News, the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development said they were “notified of a workplace fatality in Markham and that a ”ministry inspector attended the scene.”
The ministry added an investigation is currently ongoing and that no further details can be provided.
The circumstances surrounding the person’s death are unknown.
Police are asking those in the area to expect heavy traffic delays and to avoid the area if possible.
