More than 6,000 customers have been affected by a power outage in Markham.
According to Alectra Utilities, the outage began shortly before noon on Thursday. The affected area stretches diagonally from Highway 7 south toward Steeles Avenue East, bounded by Kennedy Road to the west and McCowan Road to the east. The power failure also spans major routes including 14th Avenue and Highway 407.
The outage affected a total of 6252 residents, with 1430 still without power at the time of publication.
According to Alectra, the outage was caused by a vehicle collision, York Regional Police say they responded to the intersection of McCowan Road and Hwy. 7 after receiving reports of an injured person.
The Ministry of Labour has been notified and is currently engaged, a spokesperson told CTV News.
There is no current estimated restoration time.
Police are asking those in the area to expect heavy traffic delays and to avoid the area if possible.
This is not the first major outage to recently hit the Greater Toronto Area.
On Wednesday night, as many as 31,000 residents across downtown and east Toronto were affected by a separate outage.
