CALGARY -- A Calgary man has been charged with assuming someone else's identity to avoid child-support payments and marry a second wife.

Dibua Mokendi Dieudonne Kabengele, 54, was charged Tuesday with fraud, perjury and bigamy.

Police are now looking to find the man whose identity was allegedly stolen.

Police allege Kabengele posed as Kombe Kalala, who is thought to be between 45 and 50 years old.

Both men are Canadian citizens and are originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, but it is not known if they knew each other previously, said Const. Sandra Carroll of the Calgary commercial crimes unit.

Officers believe Kalala may be living in Alberta, Ontario or Quebec.

"That's as best as I know," said Carroll. "The last known contact is from 2000. I know (Kalala) is a living, real person, but I have to locate him to proceed with impersonation charges (against Kabengele)."

Calgary police began investigating in June after being contacted by Quebec Provincial Police.

Police allege Kabengele, who was previously married in Montreal in 2003, applied for a marriage licence in Calgary after swearing an affidavit he had never done so before.

It's also alleged Kabengele was trying to avoid paying child support for two children he has with a previous, common-law wife, thought to now live in Ontario or Quebec.

Kabengele was arrested Friday at a home in northeast Calgary, and police allege he had forged several documents to apply for a labourer's job, which required a security clearance.

Carroll said Kabengele was convicted in Ontario eight years ago for illegally using Kalala's identity.
