Two men posed as plainclothes police officers when they carried out a targeted home invasion in Barrie on Thursday night, police say.

Barrie police said the suspects pretended to be police officers and then forced their way into an apartment suite on Sawmill Road, where they handcuffed at least one of the occupants.

No injuries were reported.

The suspects stole a safe from the suite and fled in a taxicab, which they hired to travel to Barrie from Toronto. The taxi has a built-in GPS and was tracked by the cab company and police to the area of Highway 400 and Finch Avenue West in Toronto.

Officers arrested two men – a 30 year old from Beeton and a 34 year old from Toronto – without incident.

Investigators haven't opened the safe but, based on information from the victims, police believe it contains cash and drugs.

Both suspects are facing several charges, including impersonating a police officer, robbery, forcible confinement and breaches of previous release and probation orders.

The men were already out on bail for at least 48 other criminal charges stemming from previous incidents, police said.

Both remain in custody.

Meanwhile, the cab driver, a 54-year-old Toronto man, was charged with dangerous driving.
