OTTAWA - A retired Canadian diplomat and UN special envoy is missing in west Africa.

A UN spokesman says Robert Fowler's empty car was found 45 kilometres from the capital of Niger.

There was no trace of him, an aide and a driver.

Fowler, 64, is a former deputy Defence minister who also served as Canada's ambassador to the United Nations and to Italy.

He has since worked as a senior fellow at the University of Ottawa's new graduate school of public and international affairs.

At the time of his disappearance, he was acting as a UN special envoy for Niger.
