TORONTO - A report by Canada's largest credit and debit card processor suggests shoppers spent significantly more on this year's Black Friday and Cyber Monday than they did a year ago.

Black Friday, the day after U.S. Thanksgiving, is the most popular shopping day south of the border, and Cyber Monday is becoming established as a day for online sales.

But Canadian retailers and shoppers have also jumped on board.

The study by Moneris Solutions says Canadians increased spending by 8.3 per cent on Friday, Nov. 26 and by 15.4 per cent on Monday, Nov. 29, compared with the 2010 Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Consumer electronics led the growth in spending on both days.

The data flies in the face of earlier predictions of weak sales due to the economy.
