Prime Minister Stephen Harper will probably call a federal election next week for Oct. 14, senior officials in Ottawa say.

Harper will ask Canadians to elect another Conservative government in order to provide stability as Canada's economy skirts around rough economic waters, they say.

Although officials from the Prime Minister's Office say no official decision has been made, several recent events have hinted at an imminent election call.

Harper met with Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe yesterday and has a meeting set up with NDP Leader Jack Layton on Saturday.

The prime minister's officials say Harper is unlikely to wait to speak with Dion, who officials say has been too busy to meet with Harper immediately.
