PHOENIX -- An online retailer in the United States has removed a sexy "Handmaid's Tale"-style costume from its website after backlash on social media.

The costume featured a white bonnet and red cloak similar to those worn by the oppressed women in "The Handmaid's Tale" TV series and Margaret Atwood book.

But unlike "The Handmaid's Tale," it also featured a provocative red mini dress under the cloak, and its model sported platform heels.

The "Brave Red Maiden Costume" retailed for US$64.95 on Yandy.com and drew critics on Twitter who questioned the thinking behind a sexy costume inspired by a story about female subjugation.

Yandy released a statement saying it didn't intend the costume to be viewed as a symbol of oppression, but was inspired after seeing the show's distinctive outfit used "as a powerful protest image."

The Canadian-shot Bravo and Hulu series "The Handmaid's Tale" is based on the 1985 dystopian novel about a society that treats fertile women as property of the state.

"Yandy always has stood, and will continue to stand, at the forefront of encouraging our customers to 'Own Your Sexy,"' said the statement from the company, based in Phoenix.

"We support our customers being comfortable in their skin, regardless of who they are or what they choose to wear. Our corporate ideology is rooted in female empowerment, and gender empowerment overall."
