CUPERTINO, Calif. -- Apple Inc. will debut its Apple News app in Canada early next week.

The U.S.-based tech giant's app curates news and can be set up to provide stories based on a user's interests.

The app will launch with English and French content from CBC, Radio Canada, La Presse, CTV News and the Toronto Star, but will eventually grow to include stories from other publications.

Publishers will be allowed to sell subscriptions through the app, though Apple did not immediately share what cut of the revenue it might take.

The app has previously been criticized for cutting into the profits of Canada's already struggling media industry, which has dealt with declining subscribers, closures of local papers and layoffs in recent years.

Apple made an early version of the iOS and macOS app available to Canadian developers on Thursday.
