The cheques are in the mail.

Mayor Rob Ford mailed the first batch of car tax refund cheques at city hall Friday, making good on a promise to end the despised tax.

The cheques were originally scheduled to be mailed in April, but they're being sent out six weeks earlier than anticipated.

"Getting rid of the car tax is a major win for the taxpayers of Toronto under this new administration," Ford said in a statement.

About 147,000 refund cheques will be mailed over the next six weeks to motorists who paid their vehicle registration fee in advance.

The cheques will be processed based on the licence plate renewal dates, beginning with January 2011 renewal transactions, the city says.

Also known as the personal vehicle tax, the $60 levy was eliminated by city council last Dec. 16, effective Jan. 1.

The tax was introduced when former mayor David Miller was in office.
