One body has now been recovered and police have laid charges against one person in connection with the murder of a Markham couple who disappeared earlier this month.

Quoc Tran and Kristy Nguyen were reported missing on Sept. 21, with police saying they were last seen on Sept. 18.

At the time, police said it was unusual for Tran, 37, and Ngyuen, 25, not to be in touch with family for several days.

Investigators later said they believed that the couple had been the victims of a “targeted” killing the same day they went missing at 111 Zenway Boulevard in Vaughan, where neighbours say Tran ran a garden supply business. Police also released a warrant for the arrest of a suspect, identified as Phuon Tan Nguyen, 35, of Toronto along with images of a suspect vehicle allegedly connected to the case.

While police said they believed the couple had been murdered, their bodies had not yet been found.

Police announced Friday that one body has now been recovered from the Twin Creeks Landfill and Environmental Center in Watford Ontario, about 250 kilometres west of Toronto.

“At this time in the investigation, the remains of the bodies are with the coroner’s office, and we are not able to verify any information about those remains until we receive it from the coroner's office,” YRP Const. Maniva Armstrong told reporters Friday.

The other body is believed to be at the same location but has not yet been found, she said.

“Officers are still at that same landfill and are actively trying to recover the second body,” Armstrong said.

She said tips from the public lead to the location of the suspect vehicle and the identity of the alleged driver, though she could not specify exactly what role he allegedly played.

Police said 36-year-old Recaldo Liburd of Vaughan has been charged with two counts of accessory after the fact of murder. Liburd is in custody and is expected to make his next court appearance on Oct. 14.

Phuong Tan Nguyen, who is not related to the victims, remains outstanding and Investigators are encouraging him to get a lawyer and turn himself over to police.

“There still exists a Canada-wide warrant,” Armstrong said. “We are looking for anyone who knows where he is to contact York Regional Police Homicide. We also want to make the community aware that we do not want you to approach him – he's considered to be armed and dangerous – and to call 911 if you do see him.”

She added that investigators do not believe that there are any further unknown suspects in the case.

“At this time we believe that there is one person that is involved for the murder of the two victims, and there's no other information to suggest that we are looking for anyone else,” Armstrong said.
