A driver in a deadly crash in North York over the weekend is facing charges, police tell CP24.
The accident happened near Jane Street and Sheppard Avenue at around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday.
According to police, an Acura was travelling southbound at a high rate of speed when it collided with a Mercedes Benz. The vehicle then lost control, struck another vehicle and hit a light standard, ejecting four out of the five occupants.
Three people were pronounced dead on scene while two others were taken to hospital, one in life-threatening condition.
Police say the person who was initially taken to hospital in life-threatening condition is the one now facing charges in the crash.
Prithvi Randhawa, 22, appeared in court briefly on Friday morning but the matter was adjourned until Monday to allow police more time to conduct their investigation.
Despite initially being taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, the accused did walk into court on his own.
He is charged with three counts of criminal negligence causing death, one count of criminal negligence causing bodily harm, three counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.
"There are young people who are dead, there's a young man who is charged with something very serious," Randhawa's lawyer, Owen Wigderson said. "These types of charges press a lot of buttons, understandably, for people."
"On the other hand, these are circumstances which happen very quickly yet the consequences are pretty severe."
